| Find the perfect marina with the Gold Anchor Scheme | 29-05-2009 |
| The Gold Anchor Scheme is a user friendly initiative designed by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA), a Group Association of the British Marine Federation (BMF), which has been helping boaters to asses the standards of facilities in marinas since 1985.
The Gold Anchor Scheme works in a similar way to a hotel grading system, but with a fundamental difference, as any award represents an acknowledgment of quality. The scheme helps the public to identify the level of facilities they will require as the more anchors a marina is awarded, the more comprehensive its facilities. Eighty-one BMF and TYHA member marinas both in the UK and internationally participate in the scheme, so look out for the gold anchors when you are choosing a new marina or mooring. Marinas are assessed at a three, four or five anchor level, with five anchors representing the top standard. Marinas are then reassessed every three years to monitor whether the facilities have been maintained, have improved or have declined. Sam Bourne, TYHA Chairman said on the initiative: “The Gold Anchor Scheme is a self-explanatory system which helps the general public to assess marinas in a form of initial research. Marinas that participate in the scheme benefit from the quality stamp they receive, as potential customers are assured that their facilities are of an appropriate standard. Both environmental factors and customer service skills are important elements of the scheme’s assessment.” John Binder of Poole Quay Boat Haven added: “As a transit marina, we see over 14,000 visiting yachts between the months of April and October. The scheme really helps us to advertise our standards, and gives us a good promotional tool to be able to demonstrate to clients the level of facilities we operate within. “It’s also a real help to have an inspection every few years. We take on the suggestions we receive to help improve or maintain our facility and follow the guidance we are given to further our business.” Artun Ertem of Celebi Marina in Turkey added: “Participating in the Gold Anchor Scheme allows me to market my marina around the world with a stamp of quality. The symbol is becoming recognised more and more often and it helps customers to asses which marina is right for them.” If you are interested in becoming a TYHA member and participating in the Gold Anchor Scheme, please contact Libby Gordon, Association Secretary on 01784 223698 or email lgordon@britishmarine.co.uk. |
