| Inland Marina Sector Worth Over £150m To UK Economy | 16-12-2008 |
| A report released recently by the British Marine Federation (BMF) details the value of inland marinas to the UK economy, taking into account the impact of the associated industry and tourism related revenue.
The study, Economic Benefits of Inland Marinas in the UK, was undertaken by the BMF in partnership with British Waterways (BW) and the Environment Agency (EA). Additional support has been provided by the Broads Authority (BA) and The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA). The full report presents both the economic significance and impacts of inland marinas at a national level and looks in detail at a series of 16 case studies, covering a wide range of marinas on inland waterways and their contribution to local economies. Case studies range from small marinas such as the facility at Alvechurch and Macclesfield Canal Centre with 52 and 55 berths respectively through to larger marinas including Penton Hook with 579 berths. The study shows continuing excess demand for berths, in particular for larger boats. The sustained growth of marinas has also been driven by a consumer preference for marina berths over online moorings and an increasing demand for residential berths. The study also outlines development issues facing marinas, such as increasingly stringent environmental and planning restrictions and physical space limitations.
